An Eye Injury Lawyer Talks About Traumatic Eye Injuries and Litigation
Eye injuries caused by trauma present challenges for the injured party. Eye injuries may result in permanent vision loss, partial vision loss and/or restriction in the field of vision. Litigation against negligent doctors and clinics over eye injuries is increasing. You should be aware that:
Air bag defects can cause traumatic eye injuries.
LASIK related errors have lead many disgruntled patients to the courts for compensation.
On May 15, 2006, Bausch & Lomb recalled ReNu with MoistureLoc, its contact lens solution, because of reports from consumers infected with the potentially devastating eye infection called Fusarium Keratitis. This is an inflammation of the cornea in the front of the eye that can require surgery.
Zithromax (generic: azithromycin) manufactured by Pfizer Inc., is a widely prescribed antibiotic. It is suspected of quadrupling the risk of being reinfected with a potentially blinding eye infection called trachoma. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Zithromax appears to block the immune system’s capability to develop natural resistance by decreasing exposure to the bacteria.
Under Food and Drug Administration guidelines, tanning salons must direct all customers to wear protective eye goggles. The intense UV radiation in tanning devices is not sufficiently blocked by closing your eyes, wearing ordinary sunglasses, or using cotton wads. Studies show that too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can damage the retina or burn the cornea. Repeated exposure over many years can change the structure of the lens so that it begins to cloud, forming a cataract. Left untreated, cataracts can cause blindness.
In 2005, my 53 year old client, Sonia, was partially blinded in one eye when she was hit by a car while she was crossing the street. Her body was slammed to the street face first. Although liability was very difficult (Sonia was trying to cross a busy urban street while her light was red.), Sonia got a very substantial settlement. With her settlement, Sonia was able to pay her medical bills, get expert assistance with her activities of daily living and put money in the bank.
